Task:
My responsibility was to help align our global team with the DSA requirements, streamline operations to meet the new removal timelines, and ensure we could deliver accurate, on-time transparency reports—without compromising user safety or response quality.

Action:
I worked cross-functionally with Legal and Policy to interpret the regulation and assess risks. I led efforts to restructure our escalation workflows to meet the DSA’s time-sensitive demands and developed internal training to upskill the team quickly. I collaborated with Engineering to adjust tooling for proper timestamp tracking, and helped draft a scalable format for DSA-aligned transparency reports.

Turning Uncertainty Into Structure: Leading Through Sudden Change

Situation:
When the Digital Services Act (DSA) came into effect, it brought in strict legal and operational requirements, including tight content removal deadlines and detailed transparency reporting. At TikTok, this created an urgent need to adapt our existing trust and safety workflows to stay compliant.

Results:
We successfully met DSA compliance requirements on launch. Our team reduced turnaround time on urgent content moderation cases by over 40%, and we delivered our first transparency report on time—earning positive feedback from internal stakeholders and no regulatory pushback.

Task:
Our task was to assess the potential harm of this content, especially considering YouTube’s responsibility to prevent the spread of health misinformation. We needed to determine how to address this gray area while balancing creator freedom and viewer safety.

Action:
I collaborated with the policy team to evaluate our existing medical misinformation guidelines. I contributed research on viewer behavior, flagged high-risk examples, and supported policy updates that required creators to clarify when they were not medical professionals. We introduced enforcement rules limiting health-related claims by unqualified individuals and ensured that clear disclosures were encouraged. I also worked with the enforcement team to create moderator guidance and edge-case examples to improve consistency in reviews.

When Creators Act as Doctors: Strengthening Policies on OTC Medication Content

Situation:
While working on the Trust and Safety team at YouTube, we noticed a growing trend of content creators—many without medical credentials—reviewing over-the-counter medications like cough and cold medicine. Some of these videos blurred the line between personal opinion and medical advice, and viewers were increasingly treating them as guidance for health decisions.

Results:
These changes reduced policy violations in health-related content and improved the clarity of expectations for creators. Viewers were less likely to encounter unqualified health guidance without disclaimers, and enforcement teams were better equipped to flag borderline cases. It was a key step in strengthening platform integrity around health content.

Task:
My task was to evaluate whether the content posed an imminent safety risk. At the time, the existing policy definitions for suicide threats focused more on overt visual indicators or verbal declarations, and there was no clear escalation pathway for ambiguous but alarming captions like this one.

Action:
I escalated the case immediately based on instinct and flagged the content as high-risk, even though it fell into a gray area under our current guidelines. Sadly, we later learned that the couple died by suicide shortly after the video was posted. This incident highlighted a serious gap in our policy language and enforcement logic.
In response, I worked with our internal policy and legal teams to draft revised policy definitions that accounted for ambiguous or coded language related to imminent self-harm—especially when contextual signals (like the title) conflict with the tone of the video. I contributed to developing a clearer decision tree for moderators, emphasizing context-sensitive judgment and urgency triggers—particularly in cases involving minors.

From Ambiguity to Action: Escalating and Addressing Coded Suicide Warnings

Situation:
While working on the Trust and Safety team at TikTok, the moderators came across a video featuring a teenage couple dancing in a cheerful, upbeat manner. However, the title of the video read, “The couple who are going to die in two hours.” The content appeared non-violative on the surface and was broadcast publicly.

Results:
The updated policy was reviewed and implemented across regional safety teams, leading to improved consistency in how ambiguous but urgent cases are handled. It also contributed to training modules aimed at increasing awareness of high-risk behavioral signals. The experience was incredibly difficult but reinforced the critical importance of precision and empathy in content safety work.

Task:
My task was to identify the root cause of these delays and build a more consistent, streamlined process that could work across jurisdictions while maintaining regulatory integrity and response quality.

Action:
I took initiative to evaluate our case handling systems, collaborated with Engineering to explore feature updates, and worked closely with Legal and Policy through several cross-functional alignment sessions. I introduced standardized case types and workflows, drafted 50+ customized canned responses to accelerate communication, and built SOPs, SLAs, and KPIs from the ground up to establish structure, clarity, and accountability.

From Bottlenecks to Benchmarks: Creating SOPs, SLAs, and KPIs for Government Response

Situation:
At Airbnb, I was responsible for handling urgent and sensitive escalations from government officials across various global jurisdictions. However, our team was facing significant delays—some cases took weeks to resolve—due to fragmented workflows and unclear alignment across teams.

Results:
These efforts reduced the average handling time to under 120 hours, while also improving consistency, cross-team alignment, and our ability to respond quickly to high-priority government inquiries worldwide with SOPs.
